Someone I know told me cartilage was made of calcium and that I should eat chicken and other animal cartilage. I thought it was primarily fat and cholesterol. Is it actually calcium?

My thoughts were that if it were calcium it should be hard like bone, but I wanted to ask people who had studied and actually knew what the substance was made of.

there is calcium in a way...

We found in cartilage much like other connective tissue:
- Cells
- Fibers
- Matrix

Mineralisation of cartilage :
Adult hyaline articular cartilage is progressively mineralised at the junction between cartilage and bone. It is then termed articular calcified cartilage. A mineralisation front advances through the base of the hyaline articular cartilage at a rate dependent on cartilage load and shear stress. Intermittent variations in the rate of advance and mineral deposition density of the mineralising front lead to multiple tidemarks in the articular calcified cartilage.

Adult articular calcified cartilage is penetrated by vascular buds, and new bone produced in the vascular space in a process similar to endochondral ossification at the physis. A cement line demarcates articular calcified cartilage from subchondral bone.

If you absorb Ca2+ by any products, that will mainly goes to your bones, then in muscles, and nerves and finally to your cartilage

so you can drink a lot of milk,... and if i were you, i would not eat cartilage of animals. One last point, to eat or drink products where there is calcium, that is very good, but you'll need vitamin D to absorb an fix it in your organism....

eww.

Sounds like they are having a laugh.
Even if cartilage was to do with calcium you can't change the amount you already have. Especially by ingesting animal carilage or calcium. Calcium might make your body healthier but it won't do much to your cartilage.

Otherwise michael jackson would have just grown himself a new nose. Think about it.

If cartilage was made of calcium, then it would be as hard as bone. It might have some, but I think that is is mostly comprised of a protein called collagen (same as your hair, fingernails, and skin).
