It is legally prohibited, however, it is available in the blackmarket to cater to the many Christian Armenians and other non-Muslims living there...of course, prices are pretty high.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a constitutional theocracy with the official religion of the Twelver Shia. The Supreme Leader is Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei. Since Islam forbids alcohol, I believe that it would be prohibited in Iran as it is in Saudi Arabia.

Only what is smuggled or made in the bathtub. Unlike most - but not all - Muslim countries there is no exemption for non-Muslims. Penalties are, as you might imagine, draconian.

After the Khomeini revolution every found bottle in the country was smashed, including great wines worth thousands of pounds/dollars each.

(sigh!)

G'day Schwan M,

Thank you for your question.

Alcohol of all kinds is illegal although it is available in bootleg form or smuggled form. There is apparently a thriving smuggling trade between Iraq and Iran.

However, if you are caught, you can be whipped, jailed or fined so it is a huge risk to take. It was made illegal after the 1979 revolution.

I have attached some sources for your reference.

Regards

I´m almost certain it is prohibited since Iran is an Islamic republic and follows most of Islam´s rules.
