Puppies cry for all kinds of reasons. Mostly from
loneliness. Pick up your puppy often and reassure
it that everything is okay. Play with your puppy
and take it outside about 20 minutes after eating.
Never leave your puppy alone until it is older.
Your puppy needs to learn that it will be okay when
left alone. Dogs are pack animals and they do not
like being alone. At night have your puppy in a warm
bed with a towel or blanket. You could get a cheap
stuffed animal and place a ticking clock inside so
the puppy will think the toy is it's mother. That might help through the night. I would rock my puppy
in my arms until it was sleepy then put her to bed.
Worked most of the time. Good luck!

HOURS AND HOURS!! :-) If you have a new pup in a crate try putting a wind up alarm clock in there so it has the clicking, it's supposed to sound like it's moms heart beat and calms them down. When my Lab was a pup and before she was house broken I kept her in her crate at night but I put it next to my bed for the first few nights, after a few nights she calmed down and became comfortable in her crate by herself, she learned it was HER space and it was safe and warm. Now she is 4 yrs old and her crate is her den and she loves it. When ever she wants to be left alone she heads for her crate and sleeps. if your puppy is crying for another reason you may want to see a vet.

All night long.... LOL.

Seriously, they can cry for hours if needed. You will reinforce this behave if you constantly go to the dog and try to "comfort" it.

Best to ride it out when he is crying, reinforce the behavior you DO want. Pet him, give him a treat when he is quiet, ignore bad behavior.

For hours and hours! He might be too young, hungry, cold, or wants to get inside the house.
