3CCDs are always better for a camera than one, regardless of chip size. The CCD is a "Charged Couple Device" and it is the chip inside of a camera that converts light into a magnetic signal. There are two parts to a video signal, chrominance (color) and luminence (light). Chrominance is broken down into reds, blues, and greens (RGB).
A camera that has only 1CCD compresses all of the colors into one signal (resulting in color loss). A camera with 3 CCDs dedicates a CCD to each of the three colors, so each color is handled by it's own chip (less compression therefor resulting in much better color definition).
You will not find any professional camera that uses only 1 chip. The size of the chips can have a small effect on quality, but as long as you use good lighting and setup, your picture will look great.
So if it's a choice between 1ccd or 3, go for the 3.

The colors that make white lite are red, green, and blue. The 3 CCD camera will always be better because each CCD only has to process one color rather than 1 CCD to process all colors. I don't have a camcorder yet but I have been doing some research. Maybe someone who has one can explain it better.

3 ccd is always better as explained it would produce better color & more vivid pictures. the relation of the size of the ccd it only is the number of picture elements let me put it this way let us say both cameras are fitted w/ the same lens the 1 ccd camera would cover more area in its picture than the 3 ccd since it has a larger ccd.
