I just started up in college again last Tuesday. I take enviornmental science and math as a decision making tool every tues/thurs. Ever since last Tuesday when I started my math class I have been kind of skeptical about staying in it. We do alot of pretty hard stuff and it requires alot of thinking. I'm really bad at math and I have anxiety about going in to get help from tutors. I also don't like the fact that later on in the semester we have to create a poster about a famous mathmatician and then present it to the class. That scares me. Tomorrow will be the fourth day of the class (2nd week) and I just don't know if I should stay in it or switch to Biology. I have to have 7 more credits in the science/math field in order to get my Associate of Art's degree. Should I just stick it out or switch into Biology. Another thing that worries me is that if I switch to Biology it might end up being harder and we might have to do a presentation in there as well. What should I do?

Another doubt I have about switching into biology is that I will get burned out from taking that, enviornmental science, and the environmental science lab. Math is really hard for me though..I just don't know what to do. I think the presentation will be hardest for me.

Just stick with the class you are in. I know how you feel about having anxiety about asking the tutors for help, but you are going to have to get through this. College is hard & if you want to succeed in school (& in life) you are going to have to learn to approach other people. So get to the tutors or teacher's assistants and get the extra help that you need. It will help you out in the end.

Also, about the presentation.... if you plan on continuing your college career i can garentee there will be a time where you have to present something to the class. DO NOT drop the class, these presentations will help you with social skills that you will need in the real world! You can do it... show the other students what you know. Be creative & make your presentation fun ...
You'll do great!

Good Luck

Stick with the math class u will need it eventually.. just get it out the way now so u don't have to worry about taking it later. And for the presentations i am also terrified to do those too. I get so shaky and nervous i can't even do it right..U should tell the teacher that doing a presentation in front of the class makes u feel very uncomfortable and you really don't think u can go through it.. Seriuosly some people even faint becuase they feel pressured and nervous about speech presentations.. So definetley talk with ur teacher and let him know how u feel about ur learning ability in that course and how u feel about the presentation u will have to do..Im sure he or she will understand..

If you don't like math, it doesn't mean it's bad, even if it's hard. If you've got stage fright, ask a couple of your friends to hang with you and practice in front of them, you might think that this won't work, because you have bonds with your friends and they respect you, but you get some practice out of this and you won't be as afraid and make less mistakes. Choose the subject you're most comfortable with, even if it means presentations, they'll only be 2 or 3 of them and the more you do the less frightened you'll be. Also pick the class that will be more helpful to your future career, even if it's hard!

Get help if you need it. Learn to accept help. Learn to talk in front of people. Math is the only pure science. You will use it all the time in life. How many kids, how much does it cost, how many guests at your wedding, how many boyfriends etc.

See this site on teen advice and look at phi-- the golden ratio. It shows the living world is all based on math, specifically phi. The width of your face compared to the length of your face is the same as your upper body (above belly bottom) to your lower body which is the same as your upper arm to your lower arm-- phi.

Do a report on Da Vinci's friend. You know that famous drawing of his of the human body? It was for his friend's book, The Divine Proportion. Your body was built on a divine ratio. If math was taught to you better you would like it. How many pixels does you screen have? How much RAM-- 512? How much hard drive-- 100G?

Help me with math. Who is older-- someone 19 or 21? Who is taller, someone 5'5" or 6'? Who is heavier, someone 150 pounds or 300 pounds? Did you hate that? That is math and biology.

I'm not a math person, so I would say switch to biology, but before you do that go to your advisor and sit down and have a nice chat about it make a pro con list. he/she would be able to help you find a good direction to take with this.
