I have a friend just recently diagnosed with diabetes and he said exactly the same thing. He said the pamphlets are contradictory of each other. The bottom line is this: steer clear of starches, as they are rapidly converted to sugar in the body. These include potatoes, rice, bread, etc. Natural sweets are ok like fruit and juice as long as there is no sugar added. Do try to limit the amount of cake, pie, cookies, and other deserts to a minimal amount. A litttle bit wont hurt you, but not a little bit every day. Speak with your doctor, get him/her to write all the bad stuff down, and then all the good stuff down and keep it taped to your fridge so you will remember.

Hey I well know what you are going through My mother has just been diagnose with diabetes and she has to eat SUGAR FREE FOODS, and there are even SUGAR FREE CANDY. There are some places that sale foods such as these, I just located one in my city for mom, I and other siblings take care of her. It can be overwhelming but you will be surprise how many people have this. So when you are cooking just keep in mind the salt/sugar intake you use. READ LABELS such as Fat Gram and SUGAR info. Things in time will get better because you are taking care of you. AND YOU WILL BE HEALTHY. Oh a NUTRITIONIST can be of HELP as well. They can Stir you in the right direction as to the do's & don't's regarding FOOD & DRINK. Take Care

As far as I know about diabetes, it is a symptom illness that
lacks the enzyme "insulin" in the human body to function
properly. Thus, diabetic people should watch their diet, esp.
sugary and starchy foods when eaten will worsen the condition.
For breakfast, try to eat wholemeal bread, egg white, oats and
hot chinese tea (no milk or sugar). For lunch, eat wholemeal
bread, boiled vegetables, white chicken breast meat and drink
boiled water. Finally, for dinner, eat again wholemeal bread,
egg white, steamed fish, sliced tomatoes and cucumber (raw),
orange fruit and drink hot chinese tea. I hope this will give you
an idea.

If you are Type 2 , you would do well to read The Glucose Revolution. In general, try to avoid SIMPLE carbohydrates and this includes anything with sugar or corn syrup. Don't try to cheat by switching to artificial sweeteners. That only intensifies your sweet cravings.
Cut out the sweets and get more veggies...this doesn't have to mean a boring, rabbit-type diet. It just takes a little more imagination :)

you can eat many things if you carefully limit sugar and carbohydrates both of which contribute to elevated levels.
try some of the recipes at the first website and spend some time at the second. try not to feel too overwhelmed, it is normal and it will pass as you learn more about your disease.
see if your doctor can refer you to local diabetes education classes, many are free or low cost and very helpful in eliminating guesswork.
I have been diabetic for several years and as long as i carefully choose when to eat certain items i love and exercise regularly i dont have a lot on my do not eat list.
GOOD LUCK!

Ask your Dr. There are also some good sites on the net. Your local hospital may give free seminars on diabetic diets, too. Check with them.
