I found a bug, looked more like a brown lump that literally grew on my dog (I found one in the summer, and one last night). It stuck on my dog, really hard to get it off. It was the size of my pinky finger nail. Does any one know what kind insect is it? I am sure it is not fleas

Thank you guys. Just a quick follow up. After I removed the first "tick" during summer, it didnot grow until last night. Should I shave all my dog's hair? or? There is no tick (god forbid no) on her anymore, do I still need to take her to the vet?

Sounds like a tick. You should take your dog to the vet. They can carry some bad diseases.

Hi Cherry, sounds like your dog has a tick and its been there awhile to get to that size.
I work for a vet and yes you can take your dog to your local vet and have them remove it and check the spot over. Or the tick when fully engorged will drop off its self. You will need to keep and eye on the spot and wash it with soapy water at least twice a day until healed. Look for infection inwhich case will need medication from you vet.
In the mean time if your going to be out with your dog in the park or camping, walking you need to protect him.
You can buy defend or active 3 both are really good at repelling ticks and other insects. Reguardless always check your pet over after being outside and bath him at least once every two weeks.
This will allow you to check him over better.

Sounds like a tick. Grasp the back of the insect and try to gently loosen from the dog. Don't just yank it out as the head will remain attached to your dog and may become infected. If you live in a northern climate your dog may be at risk of Lyme disease, there is a vaccine available from your vet. In any case, you need to use a flea and tick prevention product on your pet, like frontline.

It is probably a tick and you should take him to the vet because if you try to remove it and you don't get it all or the head stays in the dog he could get sick. Some ticks carry lyme disease and various other bad things. If you can not afford to take him to the vet or you do not have one you can pour olive oil on it and see if it backs out or get the tio of a sewing needle hot with a lighter or on the stove and touch the tick with it and is should come out. You really should go to the vet though!

It is a tick. Your dog will be more likely to get them if they romp in the woods, or in tall grass. It sucks the blood, before they have "eaten" they are much smaller.
The tick can get on people too. On people their favorite places to hide are the armpits, groin, hairline and belly button. You would be most likely to get one sitting under a tree or on a log in the summer.
They actually stick their head into the skin when they eat, so when your pull it off you or the dog pull it in the dirrection the body is facing in a firm, steady action. Then apply a little alcohol.
If you get a fever or a rash that looks like a bulls-eye go to the doctor, you could have a more serious illness carried by ticks.

Sounds like a tick. Don't squeeze it if your try removing it as the blood inside and bacteria the nasty parasite is carrying can make your pet sick. Try using a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol on it and dab at the tick. They usually let go at this point. Be careful if you pull them the head can break and remain in the flesh causing an infection. Try the alcohol with cotton. It should work.

Yes that's a tick. There are ways to remove the tick so the head does not get stuck in the dog.

That is a tick.. Make sure you remove the head from under the dog's skin or it will become infected..tweezers work nicely. Also not a bad idea to use a little doggie-soap and water to clean after removing...
