I have a soon to be 10 year old boy that we want to have a birthday party for. He is one of four kids, so money is an issue. Does anyone have fun, creative , inexpensive party ideas? He loves science. Please help!

We had a "Super Sloppy Birthday Party" for my son when he was 9. All the games were really messy.....for example: a twist on musical chairs, except we did musical pies and if you were the one holding the whip cream pie you had to smash yourself in the face with it. We filled a kids wading pool with oatmeal and made the kids dive face first for sunken toys and pick them up with thier mouth. Filled balloons with pudding and made them bust the balloon against their body. I even let them throw a whip cream pie in my face. We did a water balloon toss and at the end of the day I hosed everyone down and sent them home. We had kids on the block (who weren't invited to the party) stand on the sidewalk and watch. For one day I was the coolest mom on the block and my son was definately the coolest kid.

I get alot of my birthday party ideas from birthdaypartyideas.com But also, my son went to a party recently that was a science experiment party. They did very fun, simple science experiments (check out a variety of kids science experiment books from the library, including Kid Concoctions (PBS book)). The boys all left the party with a bound lab book - homemade that included instructions to various fun experiments, a pair of goggles and candy - of course. Boys love things that explode - check out the Pepsi-mentos experiments, etc. There are so many ideas. Check out that website I gave you.

Family Fun magazine's website is great source for low-cost party ideas. Here is a link to their site for Science party and has a recipe for an erupting volcano cake.

They also have several science experiments in their current magazine on the shelves, one being using tape over a balloon and when you prick it with a pin, it deflates and does not pop, which kids think is cool.

Good luck!

Try Oriental Trading - they have a bunch of fun stuff that comes in packs of 8 or 10 that is pretty inexpensive.

You could also go the "Mythbusters" route and try some fun kid- type experiments. The Mentos & Diet Coke experiment is messy - but awesome for a bunch of little boys. (drop a mint Mentos into a 2 liter bottle of coke - it creates a huge fountain of soda...)
