All of those stereotypical phrases other people mentioned are not anything that anyone in NY says...

Maybe New Jersey... or Yonkers or something, but not really anyone who lives in Manhattan. We generally speak without any accent, like the news reporters on television (who mostly live in Manhattan).

Anyway... some phrases that are pretty NY are anything Yiddish, like

Schlep (ex. I had to schlep these bags all the way crosstown)
Shvitz (ex. I was shvitzing the whole way)
Nosh (ex. I'm going to grab some chips to nosh on)
Putz = idiot
chutzpah = balls (ex. you've got a lot of chutzpah to compete for a cab with one of the crazies)

We say that you stand "on line", not "in line".

The train is the subway and NEVER the metro.

Someone is sleazy you can say they are a scuvat. I think that is Italian maybe. Also a skeeve.

A gay slur you can be a maricon (spanish), or a finoccio (Italian), but not really directed at actual homosexuals... just an insult.

Meat from a street vendor is "street meat", though I'm not sure if everyone says that... I just think me and my friends find that funny.

Sub sandwiches or "hoagies" are called heros or subs.

We refer to "scenes" a lot. Like the downtown scene, the art scene...

I'm tired and can't think of any sayings really... we really speak just like most other people. It's the surrounding areas that have really distinct dialects.

"Not for nothing, but..." New Yorkers wait "on" line, while in most other places they wait "in" line. Edit: I've been a New Yorker all my life. "Not for nothing" is a New York expression. Also, we say that we wait on line. Why the thumbs down?
