I'd be happy to tell you about it! I'll come back and write more in a bit ...baby's crying.

OK!

I have a BSN and have been a nurse for 12 years. I've mainly worked in Women's Health, but have dabbled in surgery and pediatrics.

OB nursing was my specialty. I attended NYU to become a midwife in '98, but ultimately didn't finish the program. Where I live, there's basically no demand for midwives. Anyway, to answer your question:

The things I like about OB:

It's generally a very happy place to work. There's no other place in the hospital where people go because they're not sick.

Most women will claim you as the "best nurse ever" just after they've given birth, if you're a good nurse, because you've just been there for them in their greatest moment of need. It makes you feel pretty good to have such admiration.

Every birth is unique and it's fun to be a part of!

Honestly, my list could go on and on. If you love OB, you'll love being an OB nurse. In my opinion, it's the best place to be.

What I don't like:

Hospital politics
Nurse gossip
Patient's family getting in the way, thinking that they know what's best when they don't.
Rude physicians
Demanding patients on government assistance
Night Shifts

Please feel free to email anytime if you think I can help you!!!

I work on the OB floor at a hospital...the schooling was rough ( but expecally since i was pregnant during nursing school) but the only bad thing about it is probally the hours and sometimes the relitives of the patient.. other than that its a wonderful job to have..you get to see alot of womens dreams come true!
