In 2007, Mardi Gras is February 20.

Parades usually take place for the 10 days leading up to Mardi Gras. The smaller krewes parade earlier, and Rex and Zulu parade on Mardi Gras Day.

During most major festivals, hotel prices tend to start at $160 per night. Price is affected more by the hotel location than the type of hotel. If you want to be close to or in the French Quarter and/or along the parade route, you'll easily be paying $200+ a night. If you're willing to stay further from the action, you can find something much cheaper.

I was in New Orleans in April of this year and had a fantastic time. The Garden District, Warehouse District and French Quarter, which are the main tourist areas, are all in very good shape. You're sure to enjoy yourself if you go.

The parades start about six weeks before Ash Wednesday, which is 40 days before Easter Sunday. They go by the first full moon after something-or-another, so it changes every year.

Mardi Gras ends at midnight on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, doncha know) when the police form a line and sweep the revelers off the streets.

If you're going with kids, you can find great parades in Slidell, Mandeville, Pearl River, etc. that are family friendly. The tourists in the Crescent City can get pretty raunchy, but they're influenced by what they see on the cable shows. (Drunk women will flash their boobs for beads if you're going to put 'em on TV!) If you're going into the quarter, then try to catch the Zulu parade and get yourself a black coconut that they've decorated into a 'head' - and yes, they'll throw it at ya, so be careful!

Mardi Gras is held during lent--the 40days preceding Easter. I was there the year before Katrina hit. I stayed in the French Quarter and had a blast. New Orleans had an abundance of wonderful food, great clubs and wild partying people. The area is small enough that you can walk everywhere.

go to NewOrleansOnline.com for all kinds of info. Mardi Gras for 2006 was greatly scaled down. Ray Nagin is in NYC now to try to get corporate sponsors for 2007 Mardi Gras.

yes, it was actually on this year, so yes it should be on for next year as well. the turn out was very small as you can imagine. Many businesses are not re-opened, and there isnt enough people to staff open positions, so you might have a hard time finding a place to stay that is in your budget.

Plus just the environment is still very trashed - so its unsightly.

If you REALLY want to go perhaps go as a volunteer and help out that would do more good to the region, then drinking and partying.

The suicide rate has tripled since last year - its not a very "party" atmosphere.

Try a local campground??

good luck!

Honey the two one in all them. while i detect a reason to party I party. i bypass all the way down to 3 acquaintances each and each 3 hundred and sixty 5 days and we meet for the Mardi Gras. I take off some days for artwork and each little thing.
