Do you pronounce it as Kai-O-Tee or Kai-Oat...personally I use the second one. Very nearly corrected my teacher about it too in high school.

I suppose I should add that I know both are 'correct', I just want to know how everyone else pronounces it. I pronounced it Kai-O-Tee until I took a trip to Canada a few summers ago and my Grandma (who now lives in South Dakota) got the Kai-Oat pronounciation stuck in my head.

It's like opossum. People who live in the country and actually deal with these two animals on a day-to-day basis say possum and kay-oht. City people who only see them in books call them oh-possum and coyo-tee. The Aztec word that is the source for coyote is koyotl, with NO -tee on the end.

It is Kai-O-Tee like you said. Coyote is singular, and coyotes the plural. It is not Kai-Oat as the sound of coyote has three syllables thus, coy-o-te.

my uncle in oklahoma would get violently mad if he heard anyone say kay o tee. All of his friends were Native Americans and he said that they said that the other way was just another way of whitening their culture. I have been conditioned to correct people and get upset whenever anyone says it that first way. Nobody understands me, but somewhere up in the clouds I hope my uncle is proud of me. Kai-oat forever!!

Either pronunciation is acceptable. If you want to be a stickler for the correct pronunciation, you might go back to the Indian or Spanish pronunciation:
kai-o-ta
or
kai-o-tl

1st.
Both are considered correct, but I believe the origins are closer to the 1st one (spanish and native am).
I've always seen #2 as the rural version.

"Kai-oh-tee," I think, would be the preferred pronunciation. But, the western American would likely pronounce it as "Kai-Oat." Either would be acceptable.
