They reduce the amount of co2 and other bad stuff that breaks down the Ozone Layer. When the first factories came put in late 1800s they had giant billowing smoke stacks. Then cars came out and they had the dark white to black smoke comming from them. If there was catalytic converters on those back then, we wouldnt be have as bad a time in the sun as we do today. Also
The catalytic converter is now linked up with all kinds of sensors
that relay the preasure and emmisions back to the computer wich tells the motor how much gas/oxygen to use resulting in better fuel economy. with out one the sensors are confused because they dont know why there is the same amount of bad fumes leaving the muffler as there is entering and can actually leasd to the engine being off timing and fuel levels being unbalanced. true they may run harder and louder, but if mpg is being better, then your converter may have been clogged or messed up in the first place.

Catalytic converters burn off anything that can be burned in the exhaust that is harmful to the atmosphere, people, and other living things, so paying $50 for a new one is a small price to pay than global warming.

They help your car pass emission inspection. A catalytic converter acts as a catalyst for both oxidation and reduction reactions that turns nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide created by your engine into less harmful compounds.

The point is passing the emissions test. Without a CC, you're stinking up the place with benzene. Ewwww

they dont really do anything on a vehicle over about 50000 miles. they are useless after that and all you need to do is hollow it out and put it back on for decoration
