You see fat, disgusting kids with parents taking them to fast food restaurants, or eating candy and riding in a stroller when they should be walking? The parents are in my generation (30's) and I am not getting why parents are giving their children such a bad start in life. The parents already have their children on the road to high cholesterol, hypertension, and heart attack. I think it's very selfish to not adequately nourish children and make sure they get exercise. I see 2yr olds that are fat and waddling with french fries in their hands! And I've had people tell me my daughter is too skinny! She eats fruits and juice and healthy food. As a parent, it is the parent's responsibility until they are old enough to buy their own food to feed them properly. I'm seeing it so much that it can't be a health problem causing the weight. It's dietary habits and lack of exercise!

Sorry if I offend with saying "fat, disgusting." This is the way I feel on the inside and maybe I should not have shared that tidbit. I don't have any self-image issues, nor am I fat. I come from a health oriented family. I just think it's horrible that people don't care about their children's health. I grew up not being allowed to eat junk (my dad snuck my brothers and I to McDonald's for breakfast on Saturday mornings after swimming), and we rode our bikes and played outside. I ran track in high school. I just wonder what has changed? There were a lot less heavy kids growing up, so that tells me society has changed.

I completely agree, I seen a 4-5 yr old girl that looked like she weighed 90lbs at McDonalds the other day and her mom was buying her a Big Mac. When she seen me looking she said the kids meals dont fill her up.
I didnt say anything just nodded my head but good grief, it would make her full if she wasnt so huge.
My 15 yr old daughter is 5'8 and weighs 140lbs
My 11 yr old son is 4'10 and weighs 84lbs
And they can't even handle eating all of a combo from McDonald's.
I dont let my children eat fast food more than once a week.
I try and make sure there are always fruits and vegs in the house to snack on.
I believe it is the parents fault for letting their children get so overweight.
It is the parents responsibility to give their children healthy choices as opposed to fast food.
If your children see you eat healthy so will they. I normally order a grilled chicken whatever at fast food restaurants and i've noticed
my daughter always orders the grilled chicken, instead of a burger she knows its better for her than the burgers. Children learn by example.

I think this is a big issue in America right now...but you must have facts before you go throwing remarks like this around.
1. Hereditary/Genetic issues...You can take 2 children from seperate families to Mc.D's everyday for a month and 1 child may stay paper thin while the other puts on 20lbs. and both have the same amount of exercise.
2. Today is a very hectic world and many parents are working multiple jobs and only have the time to stop off for fast food before rushing to job number 2. Now this is not to say that there are no parents out there just gorging themselves with food, because there are, but you must have further info on their current situation.
3. Eating disorders are for real...be it too skinny or too fat. So why is it we pity those that are anorexic and think they deserve help, yet if someone is too fat, we just say...look, they did it to themselves. All eating disorders are caused by mental issues such as depression, anxiety and bad self image. They eat/not eat to feel better.
4. Medications can be a factor also. We don't eat fast food all of the time, but maybe 1 time a week. My 12 year old last October was 75 lbs and wearing a size 7/8...then she started taking a medication and at this time now weighs 115 lbs and wears a 3 to 5 in womens pants.
So just remember that things are not always as they seem.

I dont find this as annoying as children who are loud and out of control in restaurants and parents who do NOTHING to quiet them down or get them to sit and expect everyone around them to be understanding and deal with it. I think this problem should be dealt with first after we worry about everyones health issues. But youre right kids arent eating right..its up to the parents tod o this. Unfortunately we leave all kinds of a childs education and well being to teachers who dont know better. All this corrective eating habits start at home with the parents...but is anyone listening? NO.

First, any adult who thinks of a child as "fat, disgusting kids" obviously has issues with their own self-image. Second, it upsets me to see young, severely obese children because it is completely unhealthy for them. When I was in elementary school my friend's sister died of a heart attack at the age of 13 due to severe obesity. It is great that you teach your child healthy living. Maybe you should get over yourself and start a child exercise group and encourage other children to be more healthy. If you aren't going to do anything to make a change then stop being so judgmental.

It sounds like you are an outstanding mother who really cares about the health and welfare of your child. As a teacher I wish more parents were more concerned. A child on a sugar high or inadequate exercise and rest is more difficult to help.
One of the problems with our society is everyone believes they have the right to decide what is best for us and then judged if our choices do not agree with theirs. Be tolerant.

That is a bit harsh but I know what you are saying....I agree about the overweight children and the parents feeding them fast food. I am overweight and I know that if I choose to have children they will not be allowed junkfood and fast food. I think that if those are the eating habits they begin with then they will continue to eat that way throughout life.

it's not annoying but sad. :-( i feel that not feeding your kids healthy & allowing them to be obese is a form of child abuse...not only will their childhood be h*e*l*l with mean kids teasing, pointing and laughing at them the children will grown up & get diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, joint pain, back pain, low self-esteem, lonliness & oh yeah...heart failure.
people these days are just lazy....no time or don't want to cook meals from scratch. the foods at the grocery stores are all "quick dinners"...loaded with calories, fat and sodium.
people need to be educated to read labels, get educated on calorie/fat content...use the internet to read up on healthy eating and getting recipes for yummy healthy foods.
it's not easy eating healthy...it can be more expensive buying everything fresh and it takes longer to cook...BUT IT'S WORTH IT.

Lots of children seem to be overweight these days and yes large parents tend to have large children. I think people need to be educated about healthy eating, after all we follow our parents example to a certain extent. So somehow we need to stop the rot now.

You left out one major thing. It could be herietitary. Sp. sorry. But maybe it's in the genetics of it. I agree it is disappointing to see fat people with fat kids getting fatter. We as a society need to put a stop to this. We're killing ourselves slowly with food and other unhealthy junk.
