Facial expressions are part of the language. If you make a happy face or a frown, it will change the meaning of the sign. It's also used for emphasis.
You indicate if your sign is a question raising your eyebrows. You indicate the seriousness of a statement by furrowed brows. Just a couple of examples.

well, have you ever seen a deaf person signing? They make faces sometimes too. I think it's because they tend to imitate the faces we make when we're talking to help them convey what they're signing... why don't you learn sign language and find out?

Yes, you have to be animated in your facial expression to convey emotion and emphasis to the person you are translating for. This helps the deaf person to better understand what you are trying to communicate, sort of like how a person can emphasize a word in a sentence.

Those faces are not meant to be funny .
They have a purpose and that is to help the Deaf sound out the word .They do this by trying to make the same facial contortion as the speaker .
I hope as you age you don`t become deaf . there will be a chance of someone as ignorant as you, will be making fun of you .
By the way the biggest increase of deafness is amoung teens using ear buds for their i-pods.
Good luck in the future ,

Well, I don't know about sticking out tongues, but ASL interpretors use facial expressions to add in signing for a few reasons. When hearing people talk, we use our tone of voice in addition to words to get our meaning known. So since deaf people can't hear those voice tones, interpretors use their facial expressions to get the meaning of the conversation known.

I make funny faces when I play a musical instrument and have no idea that I'm doing it, mostly because I'm concentrating on playing, not my facial expressions. Same principle I guess.

Because the want to try and have some fun with their dull, dull jobs, and they need to clearly display the emotions since the deaf people wouldn't be able to tell just by a hand.
