I am in the market for a new T.V. I've seen some DLP HDTV's and was wondering which is the best for overall quality and price. My price range tops out at $2700.00

In my opinion, the best HD picture available on any set is the Sony SXRD. It comes in sizes from 50" to 70" and is a rear-projection set using special LCD technology (LCOS). It has full REAL 1920x1080 resolution, excellent brightness and contrast. It beats anything I've seen.

Next best are the new 1080p DLP rear-projectors by Mitubishi, Toshiba, or HP. Their 1080p is "simulated", however: it's really two 540p pictures shown in rapid succession, slightly offset using a technique called wobulation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wobulation). The pictures on these sets have high resolution, but because the pixels overlap, they are a bit softer than the SXRD. Some people prefer that as it looks more "film like".

Before buying any DLP set, make sure you can't see "rainbows" . Look at a picture set at a fairly high brightness setting. Make sure the picture has an spot of high brightness somewhere. Scan across the screen with your eyes. If you see a trail of color behind the spot, those are the "rainbows". Most people cannot see them (I can't), but those who do are bothered by them.

The best overall "Quality" and "Reliability" for the
money is Mitzubishi. Beware of Toshiba, they are
having "Bulb Burnout" issues with many of their
DLP'S. Check C-Net for product reviews. If you
live near a FRY'S Electronics, check their prices.
My Mitz has been giving a great picture for almost
4 yrs. It's a 55" projection.

Your best bet for DLP tvs at your price range are the samsung DLP televisions.

For 1.00 under your budget you can find a 50 inch 1080 "P" display that will amaze your family.

Just make sure you use quality sources and seek a display that is HDMI compliant so you can be set technologically for the DRM changes coming through.

PS, for DVD playback i recommend a DCDi player that does upconverting. I find using analong component for standard DVD's on a quality DVD player is better than most "Cheap" upconverting dvd players.
