This is the first place I applied. I just got out of bartending school. I feel like I am over-qualified to be a waitress, since I was the manager at my last restaurant job, and have been doing that for years. I went to a bar yesterday to apply and they told me to start today. Here are some conditions: 1. I would have to be a server for a while first, three weeks max. 2. I would not get a break, even if I was working until 4am cleaning up(I would start at five), even a smoke or bathroom break (and I smoke) 3. When I was there, I saw the bartender open two beers, and that's it. 4. It was 8pm and nearly no one around. 5. It is a college bar, so the college kids may not tip.
Maybe I just got the wrong impression, but I had a bad feeling about the place. A lot of people talk about the bar and how "cool" it is. Maybe I just came there at a slow time.
Should I take this job? Or should I look around?

RE: Could I get a bartending job with no bartending experience? I have no bartending experience, but I worked as a waitress for 1 year and I know the wines (what wine would go with what entree) and I know how to pour a beer. I just don't know really how to make all the cocktails. Do I have a chance at getting a part time bartending job at like an...

I have been bartending for 7 years and it is really hard to find a position with no experience without starting out serving. Your school should have some leads for you I guess. Personally, I think you wasted money going to bartending school. It's all about the right place at the right time or you put in your time as a server and work your way up to the bar. Try a small time bar first, they tend to hire bartenders straight off the street. Get your experience, invite your friends, bring in some business for the bar and then you will have some ammunition for your next application.

I am a bartender myself, and I say NO WAY!

unless you are seriously broke right this minute, please keep looking. The place may or may not get packed and earn you a fortune, there's no way to tell, but this place is still not worth it. The part about no breaks is not only ridiculous but quite likely illegal. I don't care how young or healthy a person is, they can't do this type of work for hour upon hour with no rest or sitting down. Are you supposed to just do the pee-pee dance all night? Plus you might go ballistic on the customers for want of a smoke ;)
Your qualifications are good, you should find a place more suited to your desires just fine. You took the trouble to go to school, so just hold out and wait for a better opportunity. Good Luck!

I would definately look around. I was working at a TGI fridays as a bartender, and I was making around 200-300 a night. doesnt sound like you will be making much there. no breaks? hell now...need to smoke every hour or so. go to the nearest city, and look for a bartending job there, garantee if you get a job there, you will be happy. atleast 1100 a week, and you should have enough bartenders working with you that you will be able to take a break whenevery you would like. Good luck

If the revealed rules are that restrictive imagine the hidden ones, and there always are some. I've worked in bars for a long time.
And servers usually make more money than bartenders to I won't turn your nose up at that, however find another job. College students and teachers don't tip well, and they can be very condescending to people working in bars.

nope dont take it if you feel you are over qualified . my question to you is if you have all this f & b experience why did you go to bartending school ? truth is that everone has to start somewhere on the bottom you arent just going to walk in with no bar experience and be head bartender just because you went to school ,life experience ( hands on ) will get you a good job

this is the first place and it sounds like it could be the worst place but it starts now so take it and find a better place, but those restrictions sound to harsh and assomeone said may not be legal, arent there laws saying employees have to have breaks
