Very probably not.

Certainly not if you are going to Central London. You have to pay the Congestion Charge (£8 if I recollect rightly) each day. Buses and tubes are very frequent, faster than cars (buses have reserved lanes) and go just about everywhere. They are expensive if you get individual tickets, so get an Oyster Card (a magnetic swipe card): you can buy one at any underground station.

Britain's railways are overwhelmingly geared to getting people to London, so you don't want to travel to London by car either.

If you are too posh to use the tube and buses, and therefore have the money, lots of taxis roam the main streets for you to hail.

The only reason I can think of why you would want a car is if you were on business in the suburbs and needed to make a journey across the edge of the city for which there is no good public transport route. This is unlikely.

The congestion charge keeps the very middle of London clear; but driving a car anywhere else is a nightmare. London is an old city and has lots of narrow streets rather than the dual carriageways you might expect if you are from outside Europe. And if you are foreign remember that the United Kingdom drives on the left, which you may not be used to.

Enjoy your week in London

a lot of excellent solutions the following. Scotland continues to be four hundred miles from London so it really is too a ways for an afternoon out. even with in case you fly it isn't properly worth it. you do not desire excursion operators, do purely a touch studying up and choose what you want to ensure. you're an English speaker so that you'll get round. day out concepts - all through public delivery, you'd be too jetlagged to employ a automobile, it really is a foul concept in needed London and also you extremely received't like the cost of gasoline. Brighton for some good previous English sea air Hampton courtroom for a Tudor palace and probably an excellent field of daffodils contained in the gardens an historic living house in Surrey - Polesden Lacey is gorgeous no matter if it really is open yet.

It is definately not a good idea to rent a car. London is a very transportation-friendly city. There are many ways to get around town, including the Tube (subway), double decker buses, and cabs (although those could be pricey). Cars will be a headache and actually more money than getting around through public transportation. However, if you want to get around the suburbs/outer London, then go ahead and rent a car.

No no no. London is the most difficult and congested city to drive in. Also there is an £8 a day congestion charge for travelling into zone 1. It is much quicker, efficient and economical to use the tube and go by foot in the central tourist areas.

you don't need a car in London - get yourself a travelcard that will cover you for tubes and buses, allow yourself money for the odd taxi after hours and you'll be fine (we have a great public transport network).

Other good reasons not to have a car in London: the traffic is a nightmare, petrol is expensive, the congestion charge is expensive, there's hardly any parking, and good luck trying to navigate around the city by road - when our taxi drivers learn to do this it takes them months.

Have fun!

no way, London is a nightmare to drive in, plus the congestion charge and parking problems, and public transport is good there and things are often closer together than you think if you like walking. Absolutely no way rent a car, you will lose more time in traffic than anything else

No! There are charges for central london drivers each day and an all access pass for the tube is a much cheaper and quicker way to get around London!

Two ways of looking at it.. rent a car and have the hassle of
finding your way around, plus parking fees, tow away charges and if you aviod all these, you are usually parked miles from
where you want to be, Don't rent a car an you have to worry
about taxi drivers overcharging, provided you can get a taxi....
and as for Public Transport,, you need the 'knowledge'
All in all,, its a catch 22 situation...good luck !!

I would have thought that it would not be a good idea as cars in London are liable for the congestion charge and driving in london is a nightmare which would spoil your holiday

If your planning on only spending time in London use the underground and buses rather than getting a car.
If you're planning on going further afield maybe a car would be a good idea.
