I haven't really slept for about 5 days now. I'm sleepy but I can never fall asleep...just kinda hover between awake and asleep.

I have chronic insomnia. Mostly, my problem has been not being able to STAY asleep.
In the past I have gone 18 months without sleeping more than 20 minutes at a time. I found I couldnt cope with ANY kind of stress what so ever and was terribly grouchy and unhappy. I finally went to the Dr and she sent me home with a sleep aid and an antidepressant. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! I only took the antidepressant for a month or so but continued on with the sleep aid for several months.
I dont take the sleep aid now and I do still have problems sleeping. I only sleep straight through the night maybe one night a month, if that. But my sleep is better than it used to be. Here are some things I have learned that help.
1. No caffiene after 2 pm
2. No food after 6pm
3. Dont sleep in or take naps if possible. This interferes with sleeping at night.
4. Try to keep the same sleep schedule.
5. If you wake up at night and cant get back to sleep, its better to actually get up for a while THEN go back to bed.
6. I absolutely MUST have a white noise machine.
7. I MUST have the fan going to circulate the air, I also MUST have a cool room, which means airconditioner in the summer and no heat in my room in the winter.
8. Staying physically busy during the day helps a great deal with how well I sleep at night.
9. I have a goal of 8 hours of sleep and plan my bed time/wake up time accordingly.

These things help me, but I still have problems sleeping. I have tried one of the currently popular night time perscription sleep aids but it literally left a horrible taste in my mouth all day. I did sleep well but dealing with the cottonmouth/foul taste for the entire day was unacceptable.

Dont be afraid to go to your Dr and let him/her know you are having trouble sleeping, especially if the trouble continues.

I don't know why you can't sleep, but here are some things that I sometimes do to help me fall asleep.

-Make sure your room is not too hot.
-Don't lay there and toss and turn. Get up and watch tv or read a book until you feel like you can fall asleep.
-Relax every muscle and close your eyes and think about something relaxing ( for exaqmple - the ocean and a sunset or sunrise).
If none of these work, you might want to see your doctor.

There could be a number of reasons sometimes its diet (too much caffeine)or as in my case I was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder and insomnia, some mental disorder symptoms can include not sleeping enough or sleeping too much.Five days without sleep is alot.I had to get medication to help me sleep, but the next day I would feel "groggy",also excersisng can help with sleeplessness.

It could be stress.
Stay away from the caffeine, drink some warm milk (chocolate works for me) and make sure your room is totally dark. If that doesn't work go to your local herb store and ask for advice. And if that doesn't work it might be time to see your doctor.

you need to see your dr. that is really bad for your body and brain. are you under alot of stress? hopefully you aren't on something obvious that would keep you awake like drugs--if so then get help. cut out caffenine and sugar and try to be consistent on your sleeping time.
