well think about it, the older you get the more you have to worry about. For middle aged people, you get married, have kids, kids graduate, they get married. Financial problems make middle aged people ratty. For people over 50, you retire and the things that you did all your life you can't do anymore. You get medicare or medicaid and neither one pays alot but that's the only income you have. You're dealing with death the older you get, both your own and the death of a spouse/loved one. You have to make funeral arrangements for yourself which would make anyone ratty I'm sure. Your body functions aren't what they used to be and you don't know what your kids might do with you when you get REALLY old. Sometimes people are afraid of being put in nursing homes or they don't want to be a burden on their family. Independence is robbed of older people because they have to depend on someone else. I work for a nursing home so I deal with alot of old ratty people. LOL

as you age, you learn to respect age. Sure you can learn lots in books, and in school, but just being alive from day to day, and subject to all of lifes happinesses, and miseries, is its own teacher. The young have no respect for that, and old people get really annoyed watching the young make the same mistakes..

Who said that NO WE DON'T it's just a myth.

I have heard that said myself, though I don't think it is necessarily true that we get ratty. However, I think we are more likely to speak our minds more readily and somtimes we do not stop to think whether we have offended by our forthright remarks.

Thats what I think so there.........Grrrrr!

Because we become more cynical about the the world. Experience opens our eyes and It just ain't like what we thought it would be. You'll see. Remember those words.

Not being able to cope with certain situations is one. Insecurity can be another. Vulnerability could also be a reason.

Maybe because the older we get, the more cynical we become.
