The "palm of your hand" thing is actually supposed to be "fist".

Eat no meal that's larger than your fist.

But, that should be a well balanced meal.

A block of fudge the size of your fist is not healthy.

Analyze what you are eating. While the belief that "Calories are bad" is only half true, it's also true that WHERE the calories are coming from is important.

300 calories worth of fruit is a lot better for you than that 260 calorie snickers bar, (oh, and it's about 3x more filling)

not only food portions, but try to get an active lifestyle as well.
you can still gain weight if your are not burning the calories you put in.
and also talk to a doctor to make sure you are not gaining weight because of some other medical problem.
changing your portions will help and you don't have too do any strenuous exercising but a little walking and some bike riding will help do the trick, if you are healthy then it is just simple as this you have to burn more calorie's than you are taking in if you keep this in mind you will lose weight.

My suggestion is to go to Google, and research how much a serving is of each food group, and how many you need for your age, gender, and activity lvl ( try typing in "How large is a serving" or "how many servings of ____ do I need?")

Then once you find out all the info you need measure out the food servings, and eye it so you can tell how many servings your eating at a restraunt with out bringing a measuring cup.

( a word of warning, dont get portion and serving confused, your going to eat more than a serving of a food group at a time, for example a serving of bread is one slice, but a sandwich has two slices plus fillings. )

And one more thing, good luck and be careful.

If you normally eat a full meal 3 times a day, cut it down to 3 small meals and 3 snacks. Eat slowly!!! It takes your brain longer to register the food than your stomach and if you eat fast, you will eat more. Sit down at the table for each meal, if you can, and take your time and savor each bite. Once you get that down, try changing the types of foods that you eat. Also drink water when you eat. It is filling and good for you.

Serve less. Simple. But the key if you want to manage weight is excercise.

Also it is not simply about the portions. It is also about what you eat. The standard rules apply. Less fats!

Eat fruits and veg, and excercise more. You will be golden ;)

I used to struggle with my weight, it seemed like a constant battle. I started eating a low fat vegetarian diet about a year ago and lost weight without even trying. I can literally eat as much as I want to and do not gain weight. If you can deal with not having meat in your diet, and eat low fat (believe it or not there are a lot of high fat vegetarian foods) you can literally eat as much as you want and not have to worry about gaining weight.

avoid carbs and sweets. If you can get by on a whole day without having any of these two, then you'll have no problems with weight gains. It worked for me!

Look at the amount of food on your plate...now make a fist and place it above your plate of food directly in your sight line...all of the food that you see around your fist should be removed from your plate...never eat more that the size of your fist...of anything...
