I have previous experience with birds. (Finches, doves, cockateils).
I have a 3-yr old daughter, 2 dogs, 2 cats and currently 3 birds.
I work M-F, 8-5.
I am not afraid of being bitten or scratched.
I know of a good avian vet.
I have the means to provide cage/toys/nutrition/care needed by birds.
I know that parrots require more time and effort that other bird species.

Basically, I just need more suggestions on the kind of parrot I should get depending on the information above. I do not think a cockatoo would be right because I am not home during the day and they require much attention. I want a bird larger than a cockatiel but not so big as a macaw. Does any one have any suggestions??

I also want a good natured bird becasue I want my daughter to be able to visit (supervised of course) with the bird as well.

Please offer your suggestions. Thank you!!!

First of all, consider adopting a bird.
Try:

They are very experienced with matching your lifestyle up with the right bird.
However, are you sure with so much responsibility already that you are able to afford the time with another bird?
If you are sure, contact Phoenix Landing and they will assist you in finding the bird that bird that wants you.

I agree with the person who suggested that you attend a bird show. Many breeders are very educated and informative about their birds. In the mean time, look on line. There are countless sites which describe the personalities and needs of all kind of parrots.

I have an Umbrella Cockatoo and I think he's just the greatest! He's the life of our parties and loves to be held by everyone. He also demands most of our time and makes it known when he's not happy by screaming a scream that will peel paint!

Although it doesn't sound like a needy Cockatoo is right for you, I'm sure you'll find a great parrot that will fit into your home perfectly.

Good luck!!!

A conure is a step up in the bird world from a cockatiel. We own a green cheek who is sweet and a little clown. After owning him a few months we stopped being worried about the dog eating him and he's learning new things fast. But some birds can be nippy if they aren't raised properly with enough patience and time from the owner.

I would wait for a moment and find out when and where the next and nearest Bird Show will be. Go spend the day just looking and holding and talking to the breeders. Their are sooo many birds and I would put my money on the fact that you will find just what your looking for, despite the fact that you don't know what that is yet. Nothing like a bird show to really get a feel for what there is and how you fit with a bird. Good Luck!!!! I know your going to find it!!!!!

Conures are good, but with kids I would sugguest probably a Cockatoo, I have a Moluccan cockatoo who is the sweetest little guy in the world and loves to cuddle, my grandmother used to take him to the elementary schools in our area to educate the kids on birds and he was so good with everyone. They are outgoing, sweet, loving birds who don't tend to bite. I as well work M-F 8-5, but he has our dogs and our two Greys keeping him company and knows that as soon as I walk through the door at night he gets to play on his T-stand and watch TV with us. Our greys are great, but bite when they feel they want some sort of entertainment (they find it funny to bite for some reason), but beacuse of your daughter I would think a Cockatoo would be best.

Get a Soloman Island Eclectus. They are beautiful and friendly, although each bird has their uniques personalities, as you know. They do want attention sometimes, but not as demanding as a cockatoo and not as loud nor big as a macaw. I think that would be a good fit. Go check one out before you get it. I have one and I think they are wonderful.

I suggest a parrotlet, they have a parrot-like attitude, but they are a lot less work. I have one myself, and am in the process of training it. I just have to spend 45mins each day, and he's happy, although, I keep him in my budgies cage, they all live happily
