Definitely get a kitten from a shelter. Adoption fees usually include beginning shots, medical exams, testing for FIV and Flv, spaying or neutering. The fees are a bargain compared to what you will pay on the "open" market to take care of your kitten properly.
If you take a "free to good home" kitten none of these things have been done for you and you encourage people to let their cats breed when we have such a terrible overpopulation problem here in the US. Millions of kittens and cats are euthanized every year because there are not enough homes for them.

I encourage you to visit your local shelter. There are pleeeeenty of animals who need a good loving home. I just hope you don't get depressed when you go there and see just how many animals are homeless, but I am sure you will find a loving cat (or two ;) Animals adopted out of a shelter are not expensive and have had all of their vaccinations and are spayed and neutered.
Happy searching!

The humane society is the way to go. But if you cannot afford proper food (cheap grocery store brands can cause health problems due to the high ash content) and medical care (shots and neutering) do not adopt a kitten.

There are so many unwanted cats and kittens at animal shelters. Visit one in your area and find one to give a for ever home to.They do require a small fee to cover their cost it varies at different shelters.

yes, the shelter is your best bet. Pet Stores and Animal breeders are adding to the problem of pet overpopulation. Too many poor animals are put to sleep every day in animal shelters. Go check it out.
