In October I plan to hold a birthday party for a five year old. What would be a good time of day, on a Sunday, to hold it? I was thinking 2-6PM.

Also, if anyone has any ideas for activities or other suggestions, please respond!

Thanks.

4 hours is actually a long time to entertain 5 year olds. If it is just a party for kids, then 2 hours is a good time frame. About all they can handle is playing some games, having cake, and opening presents. 2-4 or 3-5 would probably work pretty well. It's possible the guests and the birthday child would be perfectly content playing with the birthday child's toys. Games with clear winners are often frustrating for kids this age, especially for the losers! Fun games are hiding pennies in the sandbox - give each child a small ziploc baggie and let them dig through the sandbox. Each child can find 10 pennies and any more they find they need to share with someone else. As guests are arriving have a table set up with crayons and markers and either white or brown paper lunch sacks. Let the kids decorate them for their goodie bags to take home. Hide little prizes around a room and have a treasure hunt to find them. Bouncy balls, little plastic animals, stickers, and miniature candy bars (ask about allergies of guests) are all fun things to find. Try to avoid games at this age that make people "out" while being played such as musical chairs or hot potato. It is really hard sometimes to watch those that are "out" and keep them occupied until there is a winner. Pin the tail on the donkey is a great old standby and can be adjusted to a theme - try pin the horn on the unicorn for a unicorn party or pin the tire on the race car for a race car party. Just make your own out of poster board. When it is present opening time, have the birthday child sit in a special chair. When he/she opens a present, have the gift giver sit next to them. Take their picture together along with the present. Help the birthday child write thank you notes and include the picture in the card.

GIRL OR BOY??? It makes a big difference in what activities you can do. I just had a party for my five year old girl. If you have girl, how about a tea party with dress up clothes. Buy her a tea set for her birthday, and buy white gloves for all the girls. Have them bring their favorite stuffed friend and eat tea and cookies. Great for pictures, and unique. They'll have so much fun.

I don't have boys, so I wouldn't know where to begin, sorry.

2-5pm is long enough before kids get tired. Blow up balloons with grains of dry rice in them.Make a noise, but the kids love them.Play the old favourites, hide & seek, etc, but make sure every kid goes away with a small prize even if it's for pulling the funniest face or whatever.Put out bowls of filling and let them make their own sandwiches. If you have a video camera, ask the kids to stand up one by one and say a few things about themselves and what their fave' part of the party is.At 5,they love showing off and you have fun memories on tape of each kid.

party Hold one during that time, naps are over for younger kids, and its not time for them to fall asleep. Have a Halloween type costume party. My daughter had her 6th birthday that way. You can have a small haunted house, pin the broom stick on the witch, pealed grapes in small bowls, dirt and worms( crushed Oreo cookies, chocolate pudding, gummy worms) cold spaghetti noodles, weird is fun! Party favors can be for best costume, homemade costume, scariest, prettiest, most thought about, etc.

Fancy dress, Power Rangers and Bratz; wash off children's make up girls, water pistols boys, lucky dip pink and blue bags. Hopefully outside or in the garage with a barbecue. 3-5 year old?, think mess, that's what they enjoy :0)

I would say earlier in the day than that because it gets dark and colder sooner. Maybe noon to four.
