one example of a free keylogger is located here:

though you could google "free keylogger" or even check out download.com and find many more

In regards to the legality of keyloggers - as someone rather uninformatively referenced above - the possession and use of a keylogger is not illegal unless you do so in an illegal manner. If you choose to run them on your home network, as the owner and administrator of the network equipment that is your prerogative, Bobby Brown. As a parent it can be a very wise choice to make. Whether you choose to let your kids know or not is a moral issue that is not required to address this question.

If you are a network administrator professionally, you may have multiple uses for keyloggers, but I am guessing such an admin would not have to query in regard to them and would firmly know just where legalities lay and where they don't - but here's a clue - the company owns the network and the computers and pays for every cost associated with them - you don't have a leg to stand on if they choose to monitor it and you get nailed as a result.

Use keyloggers at your own risk, and be informed. It is not illegal unless you use it in an illegal manner.

Dewcoons you may want to think before you speak. Hacking is not a crime if done ethically. If a user wants to protect their system by ensuring that no one else is on it, it is perfectly legal. Shish, people that are computer illiterate piss me off.
