Is there a way to convert old 8mil (from a 1990 camcorder) tapes that play in my vcr to my computer or cds's?

I heard you can play your old 8mil on your vcr then there is some kind of plug that hooks up to your computer were you can copy it is this true. It ws a 1990 panasonic camcorder we ha made the tapes on.

8mm plays on the VCR. You will then need a Video Capture device and software to convert the RF or component video signals from the VCR into signals that are recognized by your computer and to save the videos into the correct file on your hard drive. Do a search for Video Capture on the web.

We've been using one made by D-Link several years ago.

You would need to buy a "video capture card". They usually include a TV tuner as well that will let you watch TV on your computer. Once installed, you will be able to connect the VCR to your computer, play the tape, and your computer will record it as an AVI or MPEG file. Check the requirements for any card you want to buy, as you have to have a "modern" computer to run a capture card. It will not work on a five year old slow computer.

Note that you need lots of hard drive space to capture movies. The files are huge. You will also need a burner (CD or better DVD) to put the files on once you are done. Or you will run out of hard drive space real fast.

I had my wedding VHS tapes put onto CD, a friend of mine had the machine and software. There is a machine that you can buy that hooks up to your computer that will convert them but you have to have a DVD burner. You might try calling or going to best buy, or another similar store, and asking about it.
