I just bought a new Toshiba from Best Buy for $599. It's great!
It has a DVD player and CD burner.
Even my parents want to trade me their laptops.
If you're looking for less the $599 then you'll have to go for a refurbished one.

I have an ACER Aspire 3003WLM laptop, It was pretty cheap around 1 year ago (around $795).
It has around 60 GB with 256kbps memory, It's pretty fast and it has USB port, however It's not really good as a portable device, the battery lasts only 30~60 minutes, yet It's rated the worst Laptop battery in CNET (http://www.cnet.com/4520-11524_1-6478472-1.html). But over all, other than battery, it's A+. It has a built-in DVD burner with several Acer DVD burning programs.
CNET has a list of the best notebooks: http://www.cnet.com/Top_10_notebooks_laptops/4520-6022_1-102337-3.html
If you're a proffessional Internet user, or if you play video games, use graphics programs or require high-memory programs, I recommend buying a computer, It would be cheaper and more effective! =D

Look on dell.com for one. I think they have notebooks starting at $499. I have an Inspiron B130 and it works great. The key to making sure your computer doesn't start to suck: don't let anyone else use it. When you have a computer that only you use, it has a lot less problems.

Gateway is good, reliable and has excellent support, they also have reconditioned items that were traded back in for newer models at cheaper prices if you don't need a top-o-the-line model. They're not known for exploding or including the wrong restoration discs, either.

in case you basically pick it for e mail, internet, be conscious processing, and so on, than any decrease priced pc may well be nice. yet while it includes decrease priced laptops, i might make investments the better $50 in an prolonged guarantee, in case you pay under $one thousand for a pc, you would be wanting it. in case you opt to do stuff which incorporate gaming or video enhancing, ain't gonna take place. decrease priced laptops lack the processing skill to deal with such heavy projects.

Toshiba is usually among the cheapest. Keep an eye on the store sales. Sometimes they have really good laptop sales at COMPUSA and BEST BUY.
