Go to a shelter and check out the dogs there. He will appreciate you forever.

Stay away from anything with "terrier" in the name, or in the breeds background. Terriers are NOT kid dogs, I know this first hand. There really aren't many small dogs that are kid friendly. Most of them are too energetic or fragile for small children. Are you sure you don't want something larger? Its a fact that the larger the dog, the more mellow. Australian Blue Heelers are great dogs (very smart) but can be high-energy. They are medium size (knee level tops) and have a shorter coat. I would not get a jack russel though, they are very hyper till about age three or four.

A Bichon Frise, Havanese or Maltese (www.akc.org) all meet your requirements, and might be a good choice. You can check out many breeds on that website. I would aso like you to consider a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - they shed an average amount, but are great, fun, calm, sturdy small dogs. Research the breed you like thoughly, then get in touch with a reputable breeder that belongs to the breeds club (also found on that site) & certifies their breeding dogs from genetic defects. This way, you will start out with a healthy, well adjusted pet & have the lifelong support of the breeder for any questions that may arise. Good luck!

My wife and I have a Matlipoo (Maltese/Poodle mix). They are considered a designer breed and can cost from $800-$1300. Our dog Snitch will be full grown between 6-10 lbs. He does not shed. He is a very friendly breed and a great family dog. Here is the website we got him from.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi. They're small (but not too small), adorable and are good herding dogs. They'll even herd 4 year olds if you train them right.

A Cocker Spaniel sounds perfect. They are good with children, not too hyper and not too large.

a pug would be good i guess, their really quiet and they have very short hair and it's tail curls up and it's so cute haha their life expectancy is 13 years and they don't need that much excercise, their good with kids and other dogs too.
