Don't worry about cleaning it up. Just make it "clean enough" with soap and water. Your dentist will sterilize it in the autoclave or with chemicals before using it again. Trust me. Your dentist would MUCH rather you find the crown than have to start over again...
But....... $500 sounds kind of low for a laboratory fabricated crown. Was this a one-visit, stainless steel crown? This sort of thing is used for baby teeth. If your son is under 12 or so, figure out if the crown was on a baby tooth. It would have been "steel" color (silver) if it was. It would have taken abotu half an hour in one visit to complete. If this is the case, the dentist has a box full of similar crowns and simply has to check his records for which size he used and just place a new one.

When your son is grown and you tell him that you had to dig through his poop for his crown how would he feel about you? If you can afford it just get a new one.
On the other hand if life is tough let him sit on a bucket. You can teach him many lessons about tough life by doing so. Aint no germ that bleach wont kill and the dentist will autoclave and do the rest.

Dude that sucks! If u have the dough I would just pay 4 a new one, and if u don't, well...there is the bucket. Also make sure the crown isn't in ur kid's lung bc I've heard of that happening.

If you dont want to spend another $500.00 to replace it, I would have him sit on a buckett for a few days. Just make sure to sterilize it very well. Boil in hot water for awhile. and soak in alcohol.

Come on man....would YOU want to put that thing back in YOUR mouth? Yuck. :(
Whoever did the root canal and aftercare (putting the crown on) did a very poor job if it became loose enough to come off and for him to swallow it. I would see if they would take responsiblity and replace it.

My kids have crowns, and none of theirs have ever come loose, the dentist owes you on this one. I would still watch his poo though, make sure it comes out without cutting him up or anything. Good luck!

If it is gold, watch his stools for it to come through. If it is a cheap amalgam, just replace it.
