This is how most people have had their identity stolen. Do not ever give out your social security number to anyone for any reason. I even refused to give it out over the phone to the people who were coming to install my Internet access; the woman was totally understanding and said I would have to show proof of residency to the installer, ie a bill with my name and address, my license. Do not even carry your Social Security card in your wallet. People can quickly go on the Internet and put that number into a website and find out your credit standing and start applying for charge cards and cash advances against those cards in a matter of seconds. Never order items over the Internet, from any company; unless you have checked them out with the Better Business Bureau and read all of their security information on line, where your card numbers will be encrypted (changed during transmission) so that they cannot be stolen. Have a good day!

Well not with only that...
They take that number and apply for a divers license so they can show their picture under your name. Then they apply for a credit card with the social security number and the DL. Thats how they do it.

DEFINITELY -- it is a very important number to those who have that number (namely Americans, and Americans since birth). That is the gate that lets identity thieves RUIN many a life and make it miserable for them for MANY MANY YEARS afterwards.
