Meditation, in the Transcendental sense, is not used in Christianity.
Christians "meditate on the Word" by thinking and praying about Scripture that they have read. It is not a case of emptying the mind, but of focusing it.
This kind of meditation is better suited to the Western consciousness.

I do. When I pray I communicate with God. When I meditate I get intouch with myself, and relax. I don't think there is anything in the Bible that would be contrary to this.
Then again, if you are meditating to reach Nirvana or whatever, I guess it would be opposite to christian religious believes.

Mediation as prayer is encouraged by the Catholic Church.
For Catholics meditation is a quest to understand the why and how of the Christian life, in order to adhere and respond to what the Lord is asking.
One way this is done is by reading scripture, asking God to give you understanding of it, and then pondering it in your heart.
With love in Christ.

I do, I need it to get through the occasional panic attacks that hit me, it also helps me fall asleep, deal with pain, and just clear my head after I pray, so I can actually be open to receive an answer...yeah, good stuff.
