It similar in connotation to:

"It's hard to fall when you're already on the floor".

"A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle".

A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”

“True friendship isn’t about being there when it’s convenient, it’s about being there when it’s not.”

“It is every man's obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.”

“Only a life lived for others is worth living”

“Stand still. The trees ahead and bush beside you are not lost.”

“Cute is when a person's personality shines through their looks. Like in the way they walk, every time you see them you just want to run up and hug them.”

“This is the final test of a gentleman: his respect for those who can be of no possible service to him”

The expression means that the "BEACON" is a selfless entity that exists only to and for the benefit of others. It has no regard whatsover for itself. Its sole purpose is to guide others. The saying implies that one should not put the spotlight on themselves as for if the spotlight should shine upon you, it certainly will.

"Get the focus off yourself".

iv'e never really heard of it, but it makes sense. think of a light house. the purpose is to shine light outwards towards the water, for the ships to see. but when u get closer and closer to the base of the light house it is DARK...!!

i suppose if it's an analogy to life or something, that u can influence others, but u cannot truly "influence" yourself....u cannot be a light unto urself, but u can be one to others....? :)

it means -- don't brag about how good you may be at something because people will know you are good without being told by you.
In other words the 'beacon' shines to help others not itself.
