No need to tell, if it's not threatening (in any way) to the current relationship, or health of the other person. If it's something that 's dead and buried, and not a behavior that could repeat, leave it in the past and enjoy the rest of your life. I would also make sure that some kind of lesson was realized from the "big secret," if it was a mistake that you made.
However, if the secret could likely come out by someone else telling it, I would just go ahead and get it off your chest. You don't want to be put in a position where you have to cover it up with lies, indefinitely.
To summarize all of this: It really depends on what the secret is. "Not life-threatening" just doesn't give enough detail to give you an honest answer.

Some things you should be honest about but it is according to the secret. If you listen to country music or you like the Backstreet Boys that is one thing. If you took her best friend out of town with you and had sex that's completely different! Some things should be told others just never bring them up again. It will keep your relationship in tact. A relationship can't be based on a lie. If it's that big of a secret, and word has gotten around already, it's just a matter of time... you're better off informing him yourself.

Depends, let's see.
- if it's something from your past he should know and accept that if he want's your future.
- if it's something you did when you were toghether, i think he should know that too, but first you must prepare the ground, test a little bit see the reaction and decide. If you think you have a future toghether and if he hasn't how to find out then don't tell him, otherwise it's better if you tell him not somebody else.
