Arpaio aide is loyal listener to Spanish show

For the past six weeks, a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputy has been monitoring a Spanish-language radio show for threats on Sheriff Joe Arpaio's life.

None has been heard, but the daily recording of the 740 AM morning show hosted by Elias Bermudez, an immigrant rights activist, continues. More than 45 hours of the show are stored on two dozen cassette tapes.

The monitoring started, the Sheriff's Office says, after a tip from Bermudez. The host told the Sheriff's Office that a caller claimed a Mexican hit man had been hired to kill Arpaio. advertisement




Bermudez said he would tell Arpaio's office about any such calls. But there hasn't been any since.

Bermudez said he couldn't give the Sheriff's Office the phone number of the caller because the station doesn't have the equipment to track calls.

Arpaio is mentioned frequently on the show, Bermudez said. People say they wish Arpaio would drop dead or had never been born. But mostly they talk of getting him out of office and ridicule Bermudez for a stunt in July, when the activist got on his knees and begged Arpaio to stop arresting undocumented immigrants on smuggling charges.

That day, Arpaio asked Bermudez whether his statements were a threat.

Bermudez said he hopes the Sheriff's Office will learn something by listening - not about death threats, but about the immigrant community.

That's unlikely. The only benefit to Bermudez would be if the deputy paid to monitor his show has a ratings book.

What do you expect? This is part of the far left. I live just down the road from you in El Paso, so I know what you are talking about. The illegals and their supporters need to be stopped. That is all there is to it. Free speech only goes so far. Death threats are not covered by free speech, nor promoting death threats. I think the FCC needs to investigate and either fine them, shut them down, or both. Every station has a time delay so that they can bleep people and by not doing so, show support for outright murder and other illegal activities.

He frightens many who are not obeying the law. Like the Minutemen he is a big threat. He will be a target. But that is not surprising. I hear he gets lots of fan mail. The more people attack the more people who support him come forward.
Again they are just hurting their own cause when they attack. Too bad they are following bad leaders. The best they could do would to be lay low-but often the foolish don't listen to good advise.

The Mexican activists do not want us to enforce laws, they want Mexicans that are committing crimes to get away with them, they don't want our police to enforce our laws, they want us to look the other way. I hope the sheriff continues his work. This is what happens in Mexico if the criminal eliminates do not like a law they have the people killed that enforce the laws, or they have their politicians killed that try to change the government, and that will start here also if they are not stoped.
