I've been in an email relationship with a woman living in Russia. How can I know if it's a scam or not?

My husband had a co-worker in this situation. The guy was middle-aged and the woman in her 20's or maybe 30's. She kept asking for money for this, that, and the other. He finally gave up because she always said she'd try to come to the US but never did (altho' from what I understand, a lot of paperwork and a lengthy process can be involved).

I'd say that if she starts asking you for money and that continues, then you probably are being used. She can say anything you want to hear (and how would you know whether it's true?)but if she keeps asking for $$$, then I think you have your answer.

I seriously don't get why guys don't try harder to find women in the US...there are plenty of good ones around who would like a good guy.
