I have a friend who is very interested in the Seventh Day Adventist religion and she was telling me all about it and about how they do not wear makeup or jewelry. Why is this? I don't want to seem unsupportive but really...does God care about makeup and jewelry? If Seventh Day Adventist believe so...what about makeup and jewelry is wrong and why?

First, the SDAs are a cult that profess beliefs that are disturbingly contrary to what God tells us in the Bible. Please print this for your friend to read and consider before she goes too far and joins this cult:

Second, the requirement for modesty does not belong to the SDAs, although they've taken things much too far (as usual). We know from Paul's writings that women are to be modest in dress and eschew jewelry; this serves to discourage pride (which is idolatry). See 1 Timothy 2:9 and 1 Peter 3:3-6.

Peace.

i think for people to run to a conclusion saying the Adventist is a cult that is very wrong and stating points about Ellen G White its rude and not Christ like. People wear makeup for many reason.Not all Adventist or against the wearing of makeup, some Adventist hold firm to the believe that they or beautiful made and will not add anything to their appearance because they were made in the creator own image and that's how the Lord want to see them, while other Adventist wear make up to hide a scar or something else. i believe that being a child of God you should look different from the world and never to get involve with the pleasure of this world.that's just my point of view.............*L.R.B* LERLOVE4U

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array" (1 Timothy 2:9 KJV)

"Do not let your adornment be merely outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel - rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:3 - 4 NKJV)

"Moreover the Lord says: "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, And walk with outstretched necks And wanton eyes, Walking and mincing as they go, Making a jingling with their feet, Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the Lord will uncover their secret parts." In that day the Lord will take away the finery: The jingling anklets, the scarves, and the crescents; The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils; The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands; The perfume boxes, the charms, and the rings; The nose jewels, the festal apparel, and the mantles; The outer garments, the purses, and the mirrors; The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes. And so it shall be: Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench; Instead of a sash, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, baldness; Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty. (Isaiah 3:16 - 24 NKJV)

1Ti 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
1Ti 2:10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

I'm not a seventh day adventist, and I certainly wear makeup and jewelry, even though I'm a Christian. This verse is referring to vanity, not just jewelry - the women of the day would make it a little bit of a contest to see who could adorn themselves with the most costly jewels, fanciest hair styles - sorta like a lot of women do today :-D You'll notice it does NOT say "Thou shalt not wear jewelry" - it's the interpretation that the seventh day adventists take.
I believe the "shamefacedness" is the part they interpret to be makeup - I don't know how they get that - shamefacedness refers to having humility, not a naked (un made up) face.
I take issue with the fact that many seventh day adventists are vegetarians - and the fact that they spurn the military. My husband is in the military - and thank you very much, just how often does the Bible bring up soldiering? But that's just me - nobody yell at me, please :-)

They are using a passage about modesty out of context. The thing God wants from His daughters is to be adorned or dressed in good deeds. Does they mean we cannot wear a watch? No. Can we not put a bow in our hair or braid a pig-tail? No. It is making a comparison to whores of the day and Christian women. WE are NOT to be KNOW for HOW we DRESS! We are not to look like WHORES. We are to adorn or dress ourselves in a way which is becoming to Christian women, who have MORE PRIDE in their LORD than self. WE must learn to do all things modestly. If we are known for our jewels, we are making a mistake. If we are KNOWN for our designer clothes, we are making a mistake. If we are KNOWN for our whorish miniskirts and cleavage busting tops, we are making a mistake. Read the passage and see what YOU get from the context:

I Timothy 2 (Holman)
9 Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense; not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls, or expensive apparel,

10 but with good works, as is proper for women who affirm that they worship God.

They probably have a prob with it becuase it symbolizes vanity, or trying to make yourself attractive. They prob think you should not be concerned with this. It sounds like you are a good friend, just be supportive, and hold your own ideals and beliefs close to your heart
