If you have an apple, slice it up, put your brown sugar in a bowl with a few apple slices, cover it with plastic wrap, and microwave it on high at 20 second intervals. The steam from the cooking apples should soften the brown sugar. It may take a while, but it works. Once you get it soft, keep it in an air-tight container. It won't keep it from getting hard, but it'll take a heck of a lot longer.

Put it in the microwave for a few seconds. I've done it plenty of times & it works like a charm.
You can also get these things called brown sugar bears that you can put into the container to keep brown sugar moist. They only cost a couple bucks and you can get them up at Bed Bath & Beyond and similar places, or online: http://www.sugarbearsinc.com/

Ditto the apple answer. You don't need much - just put the sugar in an airtight container with the apple slices and leave it be for a week or so.

At kitchen stores you can buy these little clay disks that you soak in water and put them in your brown sugar. Keep it in a air tight container when you buy it.
