And it's not mites or bedbugs, as it starts even before I get to bed. Usually starts around 10pm. I'm scratching till I turn red. What could be the cause? Help!

You may be allergic to your laundry detergent. There is a hypo-allergenic laundry detergent called Dreft that you should try. It sounds like you just have sensitive skin. Good luck!

It will be mites.
Demodex mites. It doesn't mean that your sheets or you are dirty. It is normal but causes irritation in certain individuals.

It is very common for the symptoms to only appear or be bothersome at night. I can't remember why though.
(you can do a test for them yourself if you have a powerful enough microscope, have a little search online to see how to do it if you're interested. A derm can do the test too if they are interested but the usually don't know much about them)

These mites can actually cause or exacerbate some forms of acne and rosacea so it's important to seriously consider the possibility of them even though you don't seem to think it likely.

It could potentially be an allergy to anything. Do you wash your face around this time? Brush your teeth? Have a drink of something? Have a snack? Put cream on?
My bet is that it's those mites though.

sound like some sort of allergy--do you shower at night?? soap allergy or new detergent? do you have a cat or dog that could possibly have a new case of fleas? talk to your dr. to help pinpoint the cause but in the meantime use benadryl cream and take a benadryl tablet at night.
