If I remember right... "Hoot" was not any one in particular individual, but a composite character that portrayed the characteristics and styles of a number of the actual participants in that episode of American History - I vaguely recall an interview with these guys and that was what they said...

All the Black Hawk down guys were real as the film was based on the factual book, although they may have changed some of the Delta names to protect their anonymity.

Yes, the characters in the movie are all based on real people who were there at that time. The book/movie are based on fact. You should read the book sometime, it's even better than the movie!!
