Sure there are many heroes in this world. Most of them do not exemplify the qualities of physical prowess that you would see in the comic books. Heroes in this world make a difference in that they have the moral resolve and fortitude to speak out against a world that is leaning towards immorality and perversity. That takes strength of character.

If the traits mentioned above constitute what makes up a hero, than the world has many heroes. People like Cindy Sheehan, Arundhati Roy, Noam Chomski, and many other anti-war advocates definitely are heroic people. They cry out against a policy of global aggression in a time where reactionary and belligerent responses are considered the “appropriate” and a “righteous” thing to do.

The reason why people have the perception that there is a dearth of heroes in our current era is that we have been taught by our media that heroes are supposed to be more like Rambo and less like Gandhi. It’s no wonder we lionize the soldiers in Iraq, and don’t idolize the people who speak out against the war that maims and kills those soldiers.

Heroes, in almost every age are those who went against the grain. They were the ones with the intrepid spirit to challenge what the status quo thought was heroic. Let’s start calling people heroes who conform more to the image of Christ then those individuals who comport to wooden action caricatures we see in Jerry Bruckheimer films.

Daily. Of course, there is the obvious 9/11 folks, but there are people all over the world who sacrifice for others and don't expect anything in return. Most military (even the wack-jobs) would make this sacrifice for there country. You don't have to be a super hero to be a hero.
