You mean the military policy regarding homosexuality? Officially (and it's enforced), those who participate in homosexual behavior are precluded from US military service, and will be denied enlistment/commission and/or discharged if already serving. "Don't ask don't tell" means that it is also the official policy that the military won't ask at enlistment/commission time an applicant's sexual preferences. Thus, practically, a homosexual may serve as long as (s)he remains in the closet.

The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," policy regards gay and lesbians in the U.S. armed forces.
Before the Clinton administration, there was a policy of screening military recruits for homosexuality.
Under the Clinton policy, which has been maintained under President Bush, military recruiters do not screen for sexual orientation ("Don't ask) and troops are advised not to discuss homosexual relationships with others (Don't tell).
However, if a member of the armed forces is discovered to be gay or lesbian, he or she is discharged. In 2005, 742 were discharged from the military for this reason.

The military policy that the military cannot ask recruits if they are homosexual, but can still ban homosexuals from joining. Homosexuals in the military are not allowed to express their sexuality... ie, whereas one soldier (male) might say, "Hey, look at that girl's ***" with no problem, another might say, "Hey, look at that guy's ***" and be discharged. I don't know if the discharge is honorable or dishonorable.
by the way, it is NOT Bush policy... it was Powell's idea or so I've heard, but under Clinton, who was trying to find a way to resolve the issue of letting gays into the military but not pissing off the bigots.

It has to do with homosexuals in the military. The official policy is they are not to be there. Since the American Communist Liberites Union (ACLU) raised a fuss, the policy is now that a person cannot be asked his/her sexual orientation, and if they don't tell, or get caught, they can stay and catch a bullet just like normal people.

It basically says that if you are homosexual, the military will no longer discharge you dishonorably, so long as you do not tell anyone of your persuasion nor act on it. Military personnel is also forbidden from asking if a soldier is homosexual.

If you are referring to the military it has to do with Gays. Whereas they will not be discharged if they don't acknowledge their homosexuality or engage in homosexual activities.
