The military isn't afraid of gays. The military is supposed to uphold itself to a higher standard. And sorry but homosexuality is not seen as the higher standard. Not to mention, some people do have a problem with homosexuals. So lets just say one night Rob and Bob decide they can't take it anymore and start messing around in the squad bay. Well Tim and Tom think it is disgusting...so now what? Now the troops are torn and can't get along, and when they are supposed to be fighting and watching each others backs, they aren't. Lets say Tim and Tom kick Rob and Bobs @## because they are gay...now the military is participating in gay bashing. So they adopted a don't ask don't tell to protect everyone.
To all the answers regarding AIDS- You do know that anyone can get AIDS? It isn't just a homosexual thing. And yes there are people who are HIV+ in the military. Just because the military is tested for it doesn't mean they won't get it. If someone sleeps around and has unprotected sex they are at risk. So don't think that just homosexuals get AIDS or that military members dont' get it!

I don't think anyone is "afraid" of gays, are they?
The point with the military is that your sexuality becomes a civilian thing which you do outside of the military. In other words whilst you are in uniform living with your comrades in rows of beds, running around and shooting things you are nothing but a military instrument.
When you go away on leave you are quite free to go and shag anything and anyone or anything you want, in any position you want, for as long as you want....
You then go back to the army and become a killing machine again. Simple.
The problem the army has with gays are the ones who in line with the current trend seem to have to keep telling people that they are gay every five minutes, and then blame anything bad that happens to them on the fact that they are gay, and relating every issue to being gay. A sort of Will and Grace in uniform.
This is just distracting from the fact that the military needs its soldiers to have only one purpose in life and that is to be a soldier.
The other issue of course is that in the military you get lots of testosterone infused young men who may not have a wide life experience living closely together and the aim of their instructors is to make them trust each other without question in order to keep them alive in combat.
Like it or not there is predudice in society and someone who makes a big deal out of being gay in a situation like that is unlikely to help matters.
If you want to be a soldier, or a doctor, or a lawyer, or a bricklayer...or whatever else, why would you feel compelled to make it known that you were Gay, Hetro, Bi, Buddhist, Markist, or Salvation army. It has nothing to do with your job and similarly you have no reason to tell anyone else.
My boss has no idea of anything personal about me, except what I choose to share.

They are not afraid of gays. And being gay is allowed in the military these days. Were any of you around for Clinton?? The only issue with gays in the military is the close proximity in which men and women live with each other. But its not an issue if they don't make it one. I have been serving for more than 10 years and have worked with many gays. If you don't make it an issue, its not one!

Afraid of Gays is a silly statement.
The word Homophobia is so misused it is a crime.
But to get to your point.
They are afraid that it will decrease moral and hurt the fighting strength of the military.
I dont know if they have any studies that prove it.. I doubt it though as who a person screws does not seem to effect the trigger pulling action of a rifle.
Allowing Closet Homos (as you call them) is just a bend to political pressure that is in America right now.
For the moment if you believe homosexuality is wrong you are stripped of your human status..

The military isn't afraid of gays. But the reasons gays in the military is such a controversial subject is surely above your ability to understand.
Consider this: How is it any different for a male loving gay to shower with a bunch of males while at the same time making it impossible for a heterosexual male to shower with a bunch of female soldiers? Sounds fair to me. What do you think?

The military in general is not afraid of homosexuals they are not afraid of anyone for that matter. Homosexuals bring a lack of military barring, a unsatisfactory condition that can't be overlooked in anyway, stay away homo's

If it was my choice i would send all the gay, lesbian and bisexual people to the combat zones. They could serve the way they want to and be open about it but i am not sure the guy trying to kill you would give a crap. The only people makin a big deal of fags in the military are fags themselves. I was in the military and i can tell you i didn't give a crap if there was. We didn't worry about whos a fag, we worried about keeping our friends and ourselves alive. So get over this fags in the military thing cause thier in there are plenty of fags in the military now i promise you, that serve not for fag rights but for our country. So let off on the fag rights thing and support the ones that are in the military now!!

Gays weaken the military's moral levels. They aren't afraid of a f ag, they are afraid the weak link will cause harm to their goal of winning a battle.
