We are hoping to leave our car in public parking area, then take public transportation to and from DC this weekend. We can drive anywhere from Frederick to connect to Public transportation, just don't want to bring a car into DC.
thank you

Bear in mind that the MARC train only runs on weekdays not on weekends and holidays, including upcoming Labor Day.

Also be aware that the last MARC train leaves for Frederick at or about 6:30 PM and arrives in Frederick at 8:07 PM.

If you're stranded in DC due to missing the last train - then you need to take an expensive taxi back to Frederick. Your better bet would be picking up your friend and driving about 25 miles from Frederick to the Shady Grove Metro Station (I-370 East exit from I-270 South) and taking Metro from there. Just be aware that you need $10 for one of those SmartCard passes to get out of the Metro parking lot.

Unless one of you knows how to drive around in Montgomery County, do not be tempted to use a Metro station further to the south - in that case, you might as well drive all the way into DC. The Shady Grove Station is well signed and well lighted and directly convenient to I-370. The White Flint station is located 2 miles east of the Montrose Blvd. Exit of I-270

Have to agree with the previous answers.

Take I-270 from Frederick south for about 20-30 miles, then take I-370 east for 5 miles.

Stop at the Shady Grove metro station, and take the train in.

But you can't park more than 24 hours at the Metro station, so keep that in mind.

Ditto the poster above--- drive to a Red line station and park there, then take the train in. However, parking at Shady Grove can frequently be full so you might want to try White Flint station instead. There is a huge shopping mall within a short walk to that station so if you find the parking lot at the Metro full, you can park at White Flint mall and walk to the train. It's a very safe neighborhood with lots of shoppers and activity so coming back late isn't a problem if you do have to walk over to the mall.

take the marc train from fredrick to union station in dc. there is no parking at the fredrick station. the next station down, monacacy, has parking.

from union station, the smithsonians are a couple minute walk. you can use the red line metro to metro center. from metro center transfer to the blue/orange line to the smithsonian station.

hoped this helped!
