I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop and its great. I bought it directly from dell.com and it has a warranty until 2009 which covers everything in it. Thank God that it did, because I just had to have a lot of defective parts replaced and Dell did it for free. That was good, but it only took 2 whole days, from pick up to delivery back to me, for them to find and fix the problems. The customer service staff was great and very understanding that I didn't know anything about what was going on and without making it hard. It cost us about $800.00, but it was well worth it.
My husband has an IBM think-pad laptop for work and hes had it for about 4 years now. His company will reinstall new software o it every year, but it has served him well and really no problems to speak of. Other than those 2, I don't have any personal experience. Hope that helps.

The absolute best laptops are from the following three companies: Dell, Toshiba, and Apple (yes, as hard as it is for me to say that). If you are able to budget for it, go for the Apple. You can actually run both Mac OS X AND Windows XP on the same machine.

I would recommend HP or Compaq (really the same thing). Steer clear of deal, as their customer service is horrible and the turn-around time on repairs is just as bad. An Apple isn't a bad idea, but they tend to be expensive.

this is my first computer dell b130 around $500. I am just learning had it four months i love it. All the mistakes i make just keeps on going.
