Absolutely. Without the right education credentials, you can't even get in the door for some jobs. Some of the highest-paying professions are engineers, physicians and lawyers, all of which have strict educational requirements.
Education is not the ONLY thing that governs your ultimate wage-earning capability, but it is a very important factor.

A college degree doesn't guarantee you a good job, but it opens doors that would otherwise be closed. Many employers won't even consider someone for a supervisory or management position without a college degree, so if you don't have one you'd start as an entry level employee and would make much less. If you want to make a decent living in the U.S., you need either (a) a college degree, (b) specialized training from a technical or vocational school, or (c) lots of experience in your particular field.

part of it.
Steps:
1. Education in the right area.
Ie; Get relevant education. Just going to college and getting
anything is not enough.
2. Certification - This can often be better than any degree.
3. Internship - which can lead to opportunities never obtainable
by walking in with education only.
This person would already have experience when he/she gets
the degree later on.
Example: Me.
I was interning for 4 years before they hired me in.
I hired in 2 years before I got my B.S. because of interning.
The diploma only meant a good jump in $$4.
Company got me cheap for years though, but I got a carreer out of it.

If you were to go through an apprentice program involving one of the trades (plumbing, carpentry, etc.) you wouldn't have to go to a college or university. Some carpenters I know make much more than $50,000 per year. I would imagine that plumbers make more. So, no, you don't have to have a higher education in the academic sense, but you do need to know something and the only way to do that is through further education.

Getting a college degree no longer guarantees "getting ahead" economically, but NOT having a college degree almost certainly guarantees that an individual will struggle financially.
