How can you make 3d object to 2d(like world map from globe)?

Hi. A 3D object with details will have those details distorted by conversion to 2D. I assume a good photograph is not enough. An image of the globe can be projected onto a sphere to "reconstitute" the 3D details. Similarly, the globe can be photographed from many angles and the images "stitched" together with software.
