I would have a female simply because I am a female. It really doesn't matter because dogs are dogs, but people have their reasons and I just love dressing them up so that's why the female dog would work for me. Besides some male dogs tend to lick their things a lot, it can be nerve wrecking!!!!!

Hmm, my husband bought our first dog so he said it would be boy (if he was paying for it). I think I answered your Boston/Pekinese question. My male has NEVER gone to the bathroom in the house unless he was sick (even then it was #2). He has never marked his spot in the house- like on the furniture. He was sooo easy to train. I've had females before (Cairn Terriers), but I was younger and therefore not responsible for training them (mom & dad were). So I don't know if our female never learned, was stubborn, or if my parents just didn't have time. It's hard to say.
However, my in-laws have a female schnauzer and she knows every trick in the book. They also have an English Mastiff that needs to be told many times to sit down andhe generally has to be pushed on his rear to get the idea through his head.
I suppose it just depends of you and the time you spend with them in training. I recommend Cheerios (plain not honey nut or anything else) as a treat (instead of a fatty dog cookie) when training them, My male still loves them.

Male. I chose male primarily because I have always had males and because I have a lot of experience training dogs and can handle the fact the male dog is usually harder to train due to dominant behaviour. I can take on the role of Alpha female in the pack.
However, for first time owners I usually recommend a female, provided the owner intends to have them fixed, because they are, for the most part easier to train and have a calmer gentler nature.

I always get male dogs. I find them to be more to my liking as they tend to be more laid back and relaxed. But, they are more difficult to train. A female dog is easier to train and will also, for the most part, be a better watch dog - that mother protectiveness thing.

I have a female that hikes and humps its a matter of dominance and she is a big girl. Females seem to be bitchier around other females. My males are easier and more loving than the females. This was the same with my cats too.

I usually prefer males because they seem to have more personality, yet two of my most favourite dogs over the years have been females, so I couldn't choose - it totally depends on the individual dog.

I have 2 dogs, one male and one female. There really is no difference between sexes exept the way they pee :) Its all in personality and what you want.

Females are a lot easier to house break if you're getting a puppy. If you're getting an adult, already housebroken dog, then it's really a matter of personality. Whichever you get, get it fixed.
