Microsoft sent me a student version of their Windows XP Pro and I didn't notice that the 2cds they sent were different and installed the 32bit instead of the 64bit. Is there much difference between them? Can I uninstall the 32bit or just upgrade using the 64bit cd? Can anybody help please?

I forgot to give you guys some info on my computer. It is brand-new and came with the following (before I installed XP PRO)

Acer ASPIRE 7100
Intel Celeron M processor (1 MB L2 cache ...) or higher

System Memory: 256/512 MB of DDR2 533 MHz system memory, upgradeable to 2GB using two so SIMM modules (dual channel support)

What do you all think? Can't I just upgrade to the 64 bit?

You would still be able to use your old files (pics, movies etc) on the 64bit but there are driver issues (hardware that communicates with XP), alot of of new hardware have 64-bit drivers but not all, plus unless you install 64-bit software you won't notice any difference, and 64 bit software on windows is a bit scarce, I would leave the 32 bit on there until support for 64bit improves.

I would wait to use XP 64bit because few appliations are made for the 64 bit processor. When using just windows your computer will be faster, but when you use a 32 bit program it will emulate as 64 bit making the overall processing more. When you run XP 32 bit the processor switches to 32 bit mode making it run just like 32 bit proc.

Bascially keep what you have now until there are more applications for 64 bit.

Nope. The 64-bit version is an entirely different way of storing and using information. You can install the 64-bit version off the CD's if you have it, but any information you saved in the 32-bit system will be lost.

Also, just to be sure, your laptop does support 64-bit technology - right?

No, that system will not be able to run Windwos 64-bit version. You installed the correct one.

Here is a link to M$ with the system requirements. Your CPU does not qualify:

You can only use the 64bit version if you have a 64bit processor. Most systems are still 32bits so you probably installed the correct version. If you do have a 64bit processor, it can use either the 32bit or 64bit version.
