Recently my sister in law stopped drinking beer and switched to wine stating it was better for you. She generally had at least four a night, more on the weekends. Well question is she says she switched because wine isn't as bad for you. She is trying to loose the beer belly. Is it true that wine is better healthwise than beer?

Red wine does have certain health benefits - it contains antioxidents and lowers blood pressure. Red and white wine are not as caloric as beer. However, if she's drinking four glasses a night (a full bottle) then her liver's not going to last long.

If one consumes more that one to two drinks of anything every night, then any health benefits are going to be lost. One or two glasses of red wine have been shown to have the above health benefits. Moderation is the key and just stopping the beer intake is not going to make that belly go anywhere, it just might not get bigger as quickly. She'll need to exercise and probably change other eating habits as well.

Edit - In response to one of the above answers, I felt I should point out that ALL wine contains sulfites. It's a natural byproduct of the fermentation process that wine goes through and some winemakers even add some to their wines to increase stability.

all alcohol conains carbohydrates, which are stored as fat in the ody. wine does tend to have a lower percentage, but drinking more than one glass a day is still unhealthy. doctors often recommend one glass of red wine a day - it's good for the heart!
