I place self respect first. I think you have to respect yourself before you can start respecting others. It's important because it makes you feel good about yourself, it increases your self esteem. I like to know when I look in the mirror that the person looking back is someone I could place all my trust in. How you respect others reflects back and shows the type of person you really are. If you don't show respect for others it is really not saying much for you as an individual. Have a nice day.

respect is important to a successful society. I do not know what I would do without it I just people had more respect for each other it is really sad how people do not often show love and respect but instead judge and criticize.

Respect is important because without it, we all might as well be savages. You have to give it in order to get it. If people don't have respect, their lost. Then they wind up with bigger problems.
Respect is something that has to be instilled in you from your childhood. If your parents or guardian doesn't raise you with it or teach you regarding it, you grow up with issues. I mean in life there will always be issues regardless. But without respect, it just makes life a little more harder on that individual.

This is how rapport and trust are built. If you respect people and also make it clear that you deserve to be respected others will do just that. But respect is a give and take characteristic. And even if it is difficult, sometimes respecting someone who has disrespected you will earn their respect because you have shown maturity.

Respect is important in a life that is lived with integrity. It begins with self-respect and expands to life around you. Respect encourages kindness, demands honor, and acknowledges the worth & dignity of every living creature....

Without respect for one another the world would be an even more violent place. To respect someone is to be aware of their personal space & individual beliefs. I also think that respect is to be earned not demanded.

Respect is the basis for civility, for politeness, and for consideration toward others.
When you respect someone or something, be it your parents, the rule of law, religious or cultural standards of behavior or anything else, your behavior in matters which relate to that object of respect is significantly different.
Granted, respect is earned - it is not meant to be freely given, for that is blind obedience - and once earned it must continue to be earned....just look at the Catholic Church in the United States if you wish to see what happens when an institution loses the respect of some (okay, quite a few) of its followers....and all because a bunch of priests couldn't adhere to the vows they made.
Respect isn't something intangible. It's seen daily in the behavior of others. It's felt by each and every one of us, either as the one giving respect or being the recipient of such.
...and its loss is also equally felt when it leaves.

There are 2 kinds of respect.
1. common courtesy, being respectful, thoughtful to others. - Without this we are all out for ourselves and to hell with anyone else. In theory the human race could die off because no one would do anything to help anyone else.
2. Earned respect, which can be personal(earned based on "good deeds" or long term behavior) or professional("status" based on one's job or career). These are less important than common courtesy.
